The Hawkeye State runs primarily on coal, wind turbines and nuclear reactors. A vast majority of the state's electricity comes from coal. Renewables are largely represented by wind energy, which supplies about a quarter of the electricity generation. Iowa enacted a Renewables Portfolio Standard, but with only a 105 MW target and no specific allotment for solar energy. The installed base of wind energy is more than enough to meet this target, so at this point the RPS alone is not an effective mechanism to spur the growth of more renewable energy in the state.
